My name is Freia Lademora and I am a Registered Nurse in the AnMed Emergency Department (ED) since 2024. I chose the ED as I had a particular interest in its fast-paced, high acuity environment. This portfolio will highlight my personal nursing philosophy of competent and compassionate care with perseverance and continuing education.
Professional Nursing Philosophy
I believe that the core of nursing is providing competent and compassionate care for the betterment of the patient's health both physically and mentally. To accomplish this, perseverance and the drive to be a lifelong learner with the ability to positively impact others are paramount. Educating patients using up-to-date and evidence-based practice techniques will help in achieving these goals. I hope that, in the future, I do not lose this core belief and, instead, continue to show kindness and altruism toward patients, their families, and my fellow coworkers.
Leadership Experience Reflection
In the Emergency Department, Triage nurses help evaluate, take patient history, start an IV, and obtain initial lab work. A patient came through the front door of the ED with a seemingly benign symptom of her heart "fluttering", but her heart rate was in the 140s. After looking through her known medical history, I noticed that she had a medical history of being in a lethal rhythm called Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT). I immediately placed her in a wheelchair and wheeled her to the next available room, placed her on the LifePak, took a 12-lead EKG, and showed an ED provider the EKG. Another nurse started a line and obtained blood work. The provider determined that she was, in fact, in SVT and placed a medication order for Adenosine. This medication was given quickly with the provider present. To prevent the patient from reverting back into SVT, she was placed on a Cardizem drip and transferred for overnight observation to the Cardiac Telemetry unit.
This situation reinforced my belief that you "treat the patient, not the symptoms." The patient arrived with a seemingly harmless symptom of "heart flutters", but actually had a potentially lethal diagnosis. In the future, I will always remember that everyone is an individual with unique beliefs and experiences, and I will advocate for the rights of my patients and tailor my nursing care to their specific medical and psychological needs.
Career Trajectory & Professional Development Plan
1-Year Goal: I will obtain my BSN from Anderson University and graduate in December 2026.
3-Year Goal: I will enroll in and complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration and successfully pass the national board certification exam. I will track my progress by successfully completing all 60 required credit hours, maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA, and passing all clinical hour milestones by the end of each semester. I will accomplish this by working part-time to dedicate at least 15-20 hours per week to my studies, leveraging my current clinical experience, and utilizing school-provided support services. This goal directly aligns with my passion for primary care and preventative medicine, allowing me to take on greater responsibilities and improve health outcomes for families in our community. I will complete the FNP program and hold my FNP-BC credential within exactly three years, in time for the fall semester graduation cycle.
RN-to-BSN Professional Growth Reflection
Initially, my motivation to return to school to obtain my BSN degree was because AnMed requires it. Then, my goal changed as I wanted to further my education to potentially get further in my career. Eventually, I would like to obtain my MSN-FNP license with my focus on patient-centered care, diagnostic reasoning, and disease management tailored to individuals and families. My personal definition of professional success is obtaining happiness in my career while helping others, and being able to provide for myself now and for my retirement.
